Ishaya Audu was a Hausa Christian and the first Professor of Medicine from Northern Nigeria. He was also the first indigenous and longest-serving Vice-Chancellor of the Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, for 9 years (1966-1975).
He was a personal physician to Sir Ahmadu Bello, who was a conservative Nigerian statesman who masterminded Northern Nigeria through the independence of Nigeria in 1960 and served as its first and only premier from 1954 until his assassination in 1966.
Sir Ishaya also served as a personal physician to President Shehu Shagari, who was a Nigerian statesman and the first democratically elected President of Nigeria. He died in National Hospital, Abuja on December 28, 2018; aged 93.
